Who are we? 

Ceres is a fuel cell technology and engineering company whose aim is to bring cleaner and cheaper energy to businesses, homes and vehicles. We are working with world-leading partners to embed our SteelCell™ technology in mass-market energy products for the commercial, residential and transportation markets.

Our world-leading, fuel-flexible SteelCell™ can generate power from conventional fuels like natural gas and from sustainable fuels like biogas, ethanol or hydrogen at very high efficiency.

Made from mass-market and widely available materials, the SteelCell™ is inherently cost-effective, robust and scalable. It is an ideal technology to tackle air pollution and climate change as it significantly lowers carbon emissions and pollutants, lowers running costs and can enable renewables.

 

Purpose of the Job:

This role is to lead a team of Mechanical Engineers in the development and verification of product designs, ensuring that projects are correctly resourced and that quality work is delivered.  The focus of this team is on new products and new product introduction.

The successful candidate will have a proven mix of technical, people and process skills and will be comfortable providing leadership in a product development environment.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Line manage a team of Mechanical Engineers including performing appraisals, creating PDPs and approving leave.
  • Support effort estimation at the project planning stage.
  • Allocate work and track resource utilisation levels.
  • Recruit new permanent and contract staff.
  • Define, update and track metrics for team performance.
  • Define and champion processes owned by the team.
  • Ensure team output is at the right quality level.
  • Coach, train and support team in their work.
  • Ensure tools used by team are up to date, efficient, licensed and budgeted.

 

Additional Accountabilities as a Principle Mechanical Engineer on Projects

  • Perform design and development activities to enhance fuel cell stack manufacturability, performance and reliability, including ownership of key components and sub-assemblies.
  • Support project planning and report results in line with overall programme timeline.
  • Support and solve engineering problems using recognised issue resolution methods.
  • Perform design and production verification activities using design of experiments, test data analysis, design reviews, FMEA, DRBFM etc.
  • Liaise with suppliers on technical issues to ensure component designs are successfully delivered.  Communicate learning to team members.
 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

  • Mechanical engineering degree or equivalent higher-level engineering qualification.
  • Team leadership skills – able to give direction, motivation and coaching to team members.  Leads by example.
  • Team development skills – able to improve performance, quality and efficiency.
  • Process documentation skills – able to create and document efficient design processes that meet business needs, including selling new processes to the team and ensuring these processes are used and adhered to.
  • Strong technical experience in a relevant sector; ideally SOFC but alternatively automotive, energy, aerospace or white goods.
  • Strong problem-solving skills using recognised problem-solving methodologies.
  • Hands on experience with parts and tools and able to share and develop others in their tool knowledge.
  • Able to encourage others to learn and adapt fast.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
