Test Operations Team Lead

Purpose of the Job:

Manage the day-to-day running of the Test Operations team including the allocation of Test Engineers and Test Stands to execute Test Plans on time and safely to schedule. Responsible for safety within Test Operations. Plan and schedule testing, resolve conflicts and ensure execution in accordance with plan. Ensure compliance with quality procedures and process. Ensure work instructions and standard operating procedures are in place and up-to-date. Ensure the team is suitably sized and trained to complete the activities asked of it with suitable cross-skilling to ensure business continuity. Develop process, tools and techniques to enable efficient and effective operation of testing. Work with the other team leads to develop cross-functional processes to improve the overall efficiency of the department. Produce and report on metrics on the performance of the Test Stands. Ensure effective communication channels both internal and external to the department. Ensure high levels of demand department satisfaction with the timeliness and quality of test operations deliverables.

The role of the Test Group is to support the development and industrialisation of new technology at speed. We are looking for a Test Operations Team Lead to join a fast paced and expanding Test department to manage the day-to-day running of Test Operations. You will be responsible for ensuring test plans are executed on time and safely by maintaining test plan schedules, allocating resources and reporting on progress. You will need to ensure that the team has the right skills and the equipment is maintained to deliver testing effectively and efficiently. You will be required to report KPIs on performance and own the delivery of improvement projects for equipment utilisation and customer satisfaction. The successful candidate will be highly organised and an excellent communicator with the ability to retain lots of information.


Recruitment Brief – Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the day-to-day operation of the team by planning and scheduling testing with respect to available resources (Test Stands and Test Engineers) and relative priorities, and to consistently deliver on internal and external KPIs.
  • Proactively identify and communicate conflicts in delivery schedules and work with stakeholders to resolve.
  • Ensure that test plans are executed on schedule.
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external quality specifications and standards.
  • Ensure that Test Engineers are adequately trained to perform the tasks requested of them, for example through the use of a skills matrix.
  • Identify and address skills gaps within the team.
  • Support the Head of Test in building and maintaining a culture of “Safety-First” within the Team.
  • Ensure that testing activities are conducted safely.[MG1] [DS2] 
  • Ensure the test stands are maintained and safe.
  • Work with the other Team Leads to develop an integrated set of processes and tools that streamline and improve the efficiency of the Test Team.
  • Owning and delivering operational improvement plans to drive down wasted test time and increase productivity of the team and equipment.
  • Ensure that work instructions and other documentation for the standardisation of operational procedures are in place and up-to-date.
  • Produce and report metrics on the performance of the Test Stands.
  • Build an effective communication strategy for both internal and external to the Test Team.
  • Support the Head of Test with budget planning and tracking of spend.

  • Industrial experience ideally gained in a large test environment or manufacturing/process plant.
  • Experience of working with hazardous gases.
  • Experience of operating and programming test automation systems.

Education, Training & Skills – Degree, A Levels and professional qualifications including subjects studied

  • Chartered Engineer or on track to achieve Chartered status or similar with a relevant professional body.

  • Working knowledge of processes to produce risk assessments and other similar safety tools, e.g., HAZID, HAZOP and FMEA (Failure Modes and Effective Analysis).




This role will be required to work flexible hours which may include occasional weekends.
